Debian Rocks
Debian has never been a distro I got too excited over – I knew why it existed and what the attractions were but I usually went with something else. Then I came across this site. It features a guide on how to install Debian on the Cobalt Qube2 – a MIPS based server appliance that I happen to own.
Previously I had only been able to get NetBSD running on it, and while I can use BSD systems, I’m just not as comfortable on them as I am on Linux and as a result I have not been using it much at all. So, I decided to give the guide a shot and despite the fact that it was written assuming you were running Debian on another box already (I run Fedora Core 2 on several) I was able to get through it all fairly painlessly.
So, my little blue box is now running an OS I am comfortable with and will likely be my file server from now on – I have upgraded the tiny 4.3GB hard disk to 160 GB and put 256 MB of RAM in it, so it should be up to the task
On a sad note, one of my machines developed memory bit errors the other day, of course it would have to be the one that takes RDRAM, of which I have none to spare, so I am forced to buy some more – bummer……….
