I’ve been back for a couple of days and everything went well at the embassy, so I should hve my passport back in time for the subsequent trips. I’ve taken Monday off since it is a bank holiday and will head down to Wexford for a couple of days with the family. Not much has changed, which is good – though my little brother now ha a house with his girlfriend which makes me feel old….
My blogging frequency has been poor recently (OK, non-existant), ironically because I have had so much going on. Therefore a bulleted list will have to suffice before I dive back into work and visa paperwork. Let’s see, we’ve had:
St Patrick’s Day (OK, posted since then – but now pictures are up) Snow Patrol @ Bender Arena (with OK Go – a subsequent album purchase) The Adam & Joe Show 2007 A visit from James (one of the little brothers) More new job stuff (got a new Macbook – woooo!
My Aunt Jen sent me a message today that deserves to be quoted (with some grammar and spell checking applied):
Have a lovely birthday, it’s mad how you’re catching up with me, only a year between us now !!!!
Apparently we are aging on different calendars or something. As I draw closer to 30, Jen seems to stay rooted at 29, perhaps she switched to the hex system I proposed previously.
A quick note on something I have been experiencing since starting in my new job:
I feel dumb on a regular basis.
This is a departure from my old job, not because I’ve suddenly dropped 20 IQ points, but because I had years of accumulated knowledge there. Switching to a mindset where you have to expect to regularly be the least knowledgeable person in the room is tough.
Hopefully this is short term and when I read this post 2-3 months from now I will do so while laughing at my own newbie incompetence…….
I meant to post about this the other day when it was originally sent on, but it slipped my mind. The picture Joe used in his post about the Irish AOLers that spawned my aforementioned Wonkette-listed post attracted an interesting comment from an AOL user (that I can only assume is visually impaired). You can see the original below and the crop that Joe used (with comment) here.
In case anyone has any trouble getting there, I will reproduce the text (with some de-capitalization):
My St. Patrick’s day pictures remain un-uploaded due to the fact that I started a new job yesterday, moved offices and now have to sort out learning a whole new group and role from scratch. It’s the first time I’ve moved out of my “comfort zone” since I upped and moved to the US 3 years ago and it feels a little weird. Even then, the main challenge was new people, new country, new lifestyle rather than a completely different job.
Just days after being featured on AOL for the first time, now I get some Wonkette linkage – another first. Needless to say my traffic has seen a noticeable spike. Needless to say, I think this one deserves a wee screenshot also, though given the picture under my link I will understand if the men out there have trouble locating it Technorati Tags: Wonkette, hot brazilian girl, traffic, linkage

Well, we missed out again – by a measly 4 points and the St. Patricks day luck of the Irish just came up short. A late Italian try sealed the deal for France and the Irish missed out on points difference to France for the second year running So, that’s it for this year, but the lads did well. Hopefully we are saving up our luck for the World Cup later in the year where we play Argentina, Georgia, Namibia and (of course) France in the group stage.
Some of the Irish AOL crowd including yours truly are featured on today’s People Connection page in a post written by Joe Logon over at his work blog, Magic Smoke. There are more than the 4 featured Irish people working at AOL of course, but the request for info, thoughts and permission to use pictures went out a little late, so not everyone had a chance to respond. But, you will notice a common thread on the Patty Vs Paddy issue I think I have ranted enough on that subject (apologies to I-66).
Apparently even irrational numbers get their own day now. Well, there is a reason – today (in the US at least) is 3/14 so at 1.59 am or pm you can celebrate Pi day. For those that don’t have it memorized, Pi = 3.14159 – get it?
Unfortunately, since most of the rest of the world does not use the mm/dd convention or really care about Pi I don’t see this becoming a major event, though I could see “e day” (which could be July 2nd or January 27th depending on your date convention) catching on with a certain group of people In any case, enough geekery but out of respect for the day, I thought I would re-post this picture from Seattle:
